What inspired you to start the gallery in San Jose?

I wanted to have a space here. At the time, space was extremely affordable. I was paying under a dollar a square foot! The space was not the nicest and needed a lot of work. But ultimately, my goal was to bring a little bit of what I wanted to see and do, and to work with friends, to create a space that would feature art.

What inspired me was wanting to establish some kind of art scene. Once I figured out that a lot of people really cared and wanted to be a part of it, that inspired me to keep the momentum up. I feel like I’ve been through several stages of what it took to actually start a gallery in San Jose to get to where I’m at now. Ultimately, a lot of it was unplanned. It organically evolved into what I’m most passionate about.

Talk about the reasons behind the decision to bring art into public places such as Japantown?

For someone who grew up really admiring street culture scenes, it’s still something I feel greatly appreciative of. The reason really was wanting to further expand what we were doing inside the gallery, to take a little bit of it outdoors. For years, we had a space and for a long time people didn’t know it was a hub for people who made the space what it was. The decision was to continue exposing people of San Jose to what we were doing inside the space. We just happened to be in Japantown, and that’s where we were able to start contributing to and doing public art. I think for me, it’s always been about spreading our art throughout the city and being able to immerse myself in the city I grew up in.

When I was on the bus or riding my bike, I’d look at the city with a different lens and always imagine a space that I’d see. A big reason for doing art in San Jose was that it was just something that I thought I would enjoy seeing, and I really pushed myself to essentially fill in the spaces or gaps of culture that spoke to us. I pride myself in highlighting how great of a city we are.

What does Hispanic Heritage Month personally mean to you?

I am a descendant of my grandmother and my mother. To me, it means to be people of the land and for me, it’s not just a month. For me it’s looking at humanity as one race and that’s something I’ve been really trying to fully understand and practice. I celebrate human life and we’re all creations of our creator.

How has your heritage influenced or inspired your work?

I’m influenced by our history and traditions, our cultura. For me it is about being able to immerse myself in what it means to be a descendant of my lineage. I try to understand what are the visions and the voices and the images that I have, and try to narrate my story and my designs or my work, and see it really unfold itself, and almost help me understand that it’s connected to a long line of history.

For a lot of centuries, people were trying to erase our history. That alone really inspires me to search and to find that part of myself that might not be in a book or any piece of literature. A lot of that has inspired me to travel and to try and understand other ways of life. I think I let my ancestry really guide and continue to inspire me and what I believe is good work.

Can you describe the type of community you've built so far and how you stay connected and involved with them?

It took some time to actually realize that happened. I’ve been very fortunate that our city is big, but also small. Many people are able to stay connected just because we see someone around town. The community has been one that is very hungry. The artists in our city really continue to take chances and continue to pursue their careers in art. For us, we’ve just built something that people enjoy as much as we do. That’s been a great way for us to connect with people. Obviously, social media is tremendously helpful in that sense, especially now with a pandemic. We also stay in touch through our newsletter and website.

Also, I think we try to involve artists in as many projects as we can when the opportunities come. For us it feels good to continue to be connected with people who are new or older friends we’ve been working with. The community we built just showed up—the skaters, the punk rockers, the graffiti writers, the artists—everybody was invited, so if you weren’t an artist you were equally welcomed. We’d always tell people to bring their families and children. In a way, our community is very family friendly and at the end of the day it feels like a family.

What are some challenges that you face as a Hispanic-owned business?

I think as a Hispanic, I have been brought up with a different mindset. I’ve been trying for many years to unlearn the bad stuff or the stuff that I don’t think is good for me anymore.

You can pitch someone a great idea and they won’t believe you, or they’ll turn you down. A year later someone pitches the same idea and it sounded so much better...I think sometimes, no matter how good you do the work, no one is going to say “let’s give him this big check because they’re doing an amazing job.” No matter how much good work you do, it just feels like no one is ready to really support a person of color doing things.

I’m starting to get good at understanding that we do an amazing job in the work that we do. But I think the struggle of getting people to realize it is constant. And that is one of my ultimate driving motivators: to either get support, or prove them wrong.

What is your ultimate goal as far as the type of impact you want to have on your community?

I think the ultimate goal is to continue supporting artists that are focused 100% on doing art, and seeing them succeed to great heights.

In terms of our community, we want them to know that supporting artists and buying artwork is so important in how you can support art. We want to spread positivity. We want to spread love. We want the work to speak for itself. We want to inspire people to want to see the same in themselves and in our city.

I remember being young and seeing the little bit of art that I was able to see in my neighborhoods, and now a lot of it has been erased. I almost feel that somehow, that work did inspire me to some degree, even if I didn’t know it at the time. Twenty years later, I find myself really sort of understanding where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do. I think if art can inspire at least one person to think outside of the box that they might be in, or if they’re coming from a family that doesn’t really understand the actual work that they do, then I’ve done my job.

Veinte años después, me encuentro entendiendo a dónde quise ir y qué quise hacer.

Who are some of your Hispanic and Latinx influences, both in business and otherwise?

I would say that our ancestry, from the Mayan, and the Mestizos, and Incan empires, has inspired my art in so many ways. It has inspired me in how I am trying to live on this planet and how to be influenced by who we were as a people before colonialism.

One of my biggest influences, not so much in business, is my mother. She had a very strong work ethic and a strong attitude. I don’t know how she actually raised seven children. My mother truly inspired me to not give up and to have confidence in myself. Seeing her survive and still raise all these children on her own, to me, in 2020 is probably the most remarkable thing in terms of parenting. Where I’m at now in life, I definitely realize that my mother inspired and influenced me in a lot of ways.

One of the things that I’ve learned in business is, for me personally, limiting what I consume and how I consume even in the work that I do: am I producing a bunch of garbage? Am I producing something that is going to end up in the dump, or become waste, or polluting something? I try to think consciously in business and a lot of that has come through understanding the artisan and the craftsman. How are they making their art?
